Calgary — season one

We got
next

A men's league in Calgary for guys 30 and up. Refs on every game, teams that actually show up, and a season you can plan your week around. Registration isn't open yet, but the list is.

You're an
unc if

01

Your knees make Rice Krispies sounds walking downstairs, and you still reminisce about how you used to high jump in junior high.

02

You watched And1 Mixtapes religiously, and your favorite baller was The Professor — because we all thought we could pull off those moves.

03

You consider Vince Carter's dunk contest in 2000 the pinnacle of human achievement.

04

You bought Reeboks solely because of Allen Iverson and probably still own them — along with those 1998 baggy shorts that could double as curtains.

05

You have brand-new basketball shoesthat haven't seen a court because: work, kids, or your ACL is one bad landing away from retirement.

06

Your kid's favorite player is LaMelo Ball, and you still can't figure out how they think Kobe isn't top 3.

Get your run. Talk your junk. Wake up Monday walking like your knees are drunk.

Your body's writing checks your knees can't cash. #ProtectTheRun

The part everybody
complains about

We ran a survey of Calgary hoopers over 30 and the answers came back blunt. Almost 6 in 10 said arguments and attitudes are what ruin a run. Nearly half are done with reckless, overly physical play. A third would play tomorrow but have no team to play on. Those three answers are what the league got built around.

1

Refs on every game

Somebody neutral makes the call and the game keeps moving. Nobody argues his own foul, and the loudest guy on the floor doesn't get to decide what a foul is.

2

Nobody plays teamless

Sign up alone, sign up with a couple of your boys, or bring a whole squad. Everyone without a team gets drafted onto one, and the draft is balanced by skill so the games stay worth playing.

3

Everybody's 30 or over

Ages 30 to 50, no teenagers, no exceptions. North of 50? DM us — game recognizes game.

Twelve weeks,
one night a week

Season one is a 12-week pilot. Six teams carrying six to ten guys each, so a rough week at work never leaves your team short. You play everybody twice, that's ten games, and the last two weeks are playoffs with a game for every team. Nobody's season ends early.

Every promise on this page came out of the survey.

We asked Calgary's 30-and-over hoopers what's broken in men's league ball, and what would finally be worth registering for. They answered in detail. The charts, the priorities and the honest talk about what a season is worth are all up on the results page.

the list

Registration isn't open yet. We're locking the gym and the schedule first, because nobody should be asked for money before they know what night they're playing. Season one is capped at six teams, and the list hears about dates, venue and pricing before anybody else.
