Questions

The league, the runs, and everything people actually ask before they sign up. Still stuck? DM @asiandadhooper.

The league

Winter 2027 at Shoot 360 Calgary. Choose Friday evenings (7, 8 or 9 p.m.) or Sunday afternoons (2, 3 or 4 p.m., finishing by 5 p.m.). Fall registration is closed.

Why start a league now?

Court availability changes in the fall. All summer I could book a Friday run most weeks, but once school and club basketball start up, the gyms fill fast and stay booked until around May.

With a league we book the floor months ahead, so you've got a weekly game on the calendar and it doesn't depend on whether I can find a court.

Are the Friday runs still happening?

Yes, but there'll be a lot fewer of them. Winter bookings for Friday nights are pretty much full at the gyms we use. School teams and club programs take most of that time from late September through to about May.

We'll still put runs on when we can get a court. They'll just be one-offs instead of something you can count on.

Is the league replacing the runs?

No, they're two different things. A run is one night of pickup with the right guys on the floor. The league is a full season where you're on the same team every week, the games count, and there are refs.

We're starting the league now because Friday courts get hard to book once fall hits, but it's not a swap.

Why join the league instead of just coming to the runs?

The league is the one you can plan around. Choose Friday evenings or Sunday afternoons for Winter 2027, with a team that's expecting you and games that mean something.

You don't have to pick one either. Once the season starts, league players pay half price on their own spot at any run we do put on.

Do I need a team?

No. Join solo and we'll place you on a team, so you don't need to find seven other guys. Winter registration also lets you bring a team if you already have a squad.

Can I sign up with a friend?

Yes. You can join solo or bring a team for Winter 2027. If you're joining solo and want to play with a friend, tell us in the registration form. We take requests into account, but can't guarantee every request because teams still need to be balanced.

Do I need basketball experience?

No. You don't need high school, college, or any organized basketball behind you.

Most guys coming in do have some. Probably around 80% played at least high school. But that just helps us figure out where to put you, it's not a requirement to join.

I haven't played in years. Can I still join?

Yeah, that's a lot of guys in the league. Plenty of people are coming back after years off, and you don't need to be in game shape before you start.

If getting back into basketball is part of how you want to get active again, that's fine. Just know it's a real league with guys who want good games, not a workout class.

What if I'm just not that good?

You can still register. You don't have to be one of the better players here to have a spot on a team.

Since we're drafting, we're looking at the whole player pool and building from there, so we can put you somewhere you'll actually get to play.

Is this a beginner league?

No. Most guys here have played before and the games are meant to be worth showing up for. But it's not only for former college players either.

Drafting the teams ourselves is what lets us handle both.

What if you've never seen me play?

Just be honest about where your game is at. If you played high school ten years ago and haven't picked up a ball since, say that. If you're newer but you play pickup every week, say that too.

You don't need to sell yourself. The more accurate you are, the better we can put the teams together.

Do I have to make every game?

No. Everybody's got an adult life and people are going to miss one here and there.

What we're asking is that you sign up because you actually plan to play the season, not because you might show up occasionally. If you already know you'll miss most of it, wait for the next one.

How much will I actually play?

Rosters are capped at eight and that's deliberate. We're not building 11 or 12 man rosters where you spend half the game on the bench.

Nobody's promising identical minutes every game, but eight is small enough that everybody gets a real run.

Are there referees?

Yes, on every game. You get to show up and play instead of spending the game arguing about whether that was a foul.

How competitive is it?

Competitive enough that guys care about winning, but not so serious that a Sunday afternoon becomes your second job.

Most guys here have played before and want good basketball. That's what we're aiming for.

Where is it, and when?

Winter 2027 is at Shoot 360 Calgary. Friday games start at 7, 8 or 9 p.m. Sunday games start at 2, 3 or 4 p.m., with the last game finishing at 5 p.m. The Winter season page has registration dates and the Friday season start date.

Fall 2026 is already in season and registration is closed. Its Sunday schedule belongs to the founding season, not Winter.

Can the league run on Fridays?

Yes. Winter 2027 offers Friday evenings at Shoot 360 Calgary, with games starting at 7, 8 or 9 p.m. You can also choose Sunday afternoons: games start at 2, 3 or 4 p.m., with the last game finishing at 5 p.m.

Check the Winter season page for dates. Join the Winter waitlist before registration opens; adding your name doesn't reserve a paid spot.

Is there anything going on over the holidays?

The Fall season finishes November 29, with a bye week around Remembrance Day. Winter 2027 is the next season.

December is where runs come back in. School and club programs break for the holidays, so gym time actually opens up that month.

What does it cost?

Winter 2027 is $230 CAD per player for the season. Scheduling, referees, scorekeeping and court time are handled.

The $207 founding-season price was for Fall 2026. Check Winter registration for any offer that applies to your spot.

What if I have to pull out?

You get a full refund any time before we announce the teams.

Once the draft happens your spot is part of somebody's roster, so after that you can either pass it to another player or bank the full amount as credit toward next season. Either way, just let us know early.

The run

Code-gated pickup, capped, Calgary only.

How do I get a code?

Codes go out on Instagram at @asiandadhooper. No code, no court. The runs are capped, so that's how we keep the numbers right.

What does a spot cost?

$20 a head. One checkout covers up to ten spots, so the whole squad rides on one payment — ten of you is $200.

Can I bring my guys?

Yeah, up to nine of them. You pay for every spot in one checkout, so you don't need everybody sitting on their phone at the same time.

Where is the run?

It depends which gym we can book that week. We email you the address before the run.

Can I get my money back?

No refunds, locked is locked. Your spot can still go to somebody else though. Pass it to a guy you know, or let me know and I'll put it on the story so it doesn't sit empty.

How old do I have to be?

Thirty and up. If you're under 30 and we haven't cleared you beforehand, we can cancel your spot without a refund, so DM us before you book.

Do league players pay less?

Yeah, half price on your own spot for any run from September 27 on. Book with the email on your league account and it comes off at checkout. Requested a sub because you couldn’t make a league game? Once that game’s score is final, your uncancelled request earns one free make-up run spot, whether or not a sub was found. Cancelled requests don’t qualify. If you can attend after all, contact the league to cancel your request. An unused credit applies automatically before the half-price discount, with no sign-in needed. Extra spots stay full price.

Are the runs still happening this fall?

There'll be fewer of them. Winter bookings for Friday nights are pretty much full at the gyms we use, and that holds through to about May. The league is the version you can put in your calendar.

The Unc League

Why 30 and up?

Because everybody on the floor is at the same stage of life. Same pace, same beat-up knees, same reason for getting back on court. That's the whole point of the thing.

What's an unc?

It's the guy who still has game but needs a longer warmup than he used to. Around here it's not an insult, it's basically everybody.

What does #ProtectTheRun mean?

It's shorthand for the stuff that keeps the run good: the code, the cap, the age range, and not being the guy who argues every call. A run is only as good as who's on the floor.

Who's behind this?

Conrad Yeung, though most people know me as AsianDadhooper. I've been putting on the Friday runs here in Calgary, and the league came out of those. Quickest way to reach me is @asiandadhooper on Instagram.
